An annual music festival outside of Columbia, MO asked me to create a set of trading cards for the 50 or so bands that performed there in 2017. My goal for this project was to create an alternate form of currency during the three day event. I created seven ‘Bank’ decks that contained all the cards, including the rare cards. These were given to event organizers. The remaining 50 ‘Starter Packs’ contained 10 cards each and were distributed to the bands before the festival. To my delight, throughout the course of the three day festival, much card-trading occurred as individuals sought to obtain all the cards. I saw physical goods as well as cash exchanged for cards. It reminded me of my childhood in the 80s when Garbage Pail Kids were traded amongst the neighborhood kids before any of us had any idea what money was. The project was an incredible success.
